TRAVILLA

With a career spanning over forty years and more than 100 credits to his name, William Travilla was an American costume designer in films and is one of the world’s most prolific designers to date. Travilla became a Hollywood star in his own right, becoming so close to many of the stars he dressed.

His most famous muse is Marilyn Monroe, he was best known for designing Monroe’s costumes in 8 of her films. But Travilla dressed approx 270 celebrities including: Joanne Woodward, Paul Newman, Jane Russell, Errol Flynn, Joan Crawford, Ann Sheridan, Lauren Bacall, Ann Margaret, Sidney Poitier and Judy Garland. As a young man Travilla designed for strippers in Hollywood - apparently he used to walk past them on his way to college, was not impressed with their clothes and thought he could do better, “and did.” Travilla died in November 1990.
